12.24.19 - How To: Run a Website Like a Pro
Hi guys! Yesterday I talked about how to blog like a pro, so today I want to talk about How to run a website like a pro! (If you haven't read that yet, feel free to drop by.) With websites it can be a little different from blogging so I want to be able to provide a little bit of insight on that today! As you may know, there are so many awesome websites out there. From retailers, to news sites, to games, to anything you can image there is probably a website for that. However, these tips are just general website tips and can applied to whatever the website may contribute! So let's dive into these tips!
Tip 1 - Know Your Goal
Each website serves a different purpose. Know what you want your website to serve and go out and achieve it!
Tip 2 - Know That You're A Human Interacting with Humans
No one wants to get on a website and feel like it is super impersonal and almost feels like there's not a real person behind. People like interacting with people, not bots. Make it real.
Tip 3 - Know That Less is More
People do not read every single article on a website. Scanning it for relevant items or something that catches to eye is way better! People's attention span isn't very long. Go for Something that catches you're eye over so many words it all gets blurred together!
So this video only really dove into 3 tips, but also had helpful how to's on how to build a website too! It's very interesting and even has all the tips written out on Site Builder. I highly suggest clicking on that and finding more details.
From Small Biz Trends I found a THREE more tips that I think are really important and that you should KNOW!
Tip 4 - Know Your Inspiration
Look around for examples that draw you in! Obviously copying them is not the right way to go, but if there's something you like see if you can make it your own! Find what works for you, get some ideas, and create your own!
Tip 5 - Know Your Domain
Okay so this one didn't quite fit the know format, but we'll roll with it. This one is important in order to get exposure. Basically, just own your domain! It is way better to have "yourbusinessname.com" rather than "yourbusinessname.godaddy.com" or something of that sort with a second site within your domain. It makes it easier to find and looks professional too!
Tip 6 - Know how to Grow
What you do at the beginning might not work later on down the road. Know how to grow in ideas, in size, or in any other way! You're going to be learning as you start the process. You will know more later on that you might not have known at the beginning. Know when it is time for a change and to grow in your mindset!
Now that we know some helpful tips, here's a good example of a company doing this! Like I said earlier I know there are several different websites that show this, but Ikea is one of my favorites!
IKEA is such great website! From the beginning they have such a clean crisp site. They have everything you are looking for right at the top categorized. Whether you are looking by product or room they make it easy. They also have an eye catching graphic scrolling on the home page. It hits all of their important products or sales! The stuff you are most likely interested in! Also they do not just show you their products and prices, they give you ways to use their products! They have ideas on what to do, how to decorate, and so much more. It is for sure a site I recommend you all look into!!
These tips are super helpful for looking into starting a new website. I think that without these things it can often be hard and confusing. These tips are such a great way to build off of and reference in the beginning. Obviously you have to change things as you get further along, but it is such a great starting point. Also IKEA is such a great reference point if you are going into retail! Just the overall look and flow of the website provides so much insight. It gives a great example of crispness, but not overdoing it. It has things that are bold and standout! I love the store and the site replicates that too!
Thanks so much for taking up some of your time to read this today! Feel free to leave comment below or visit my other blogs! Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy this holiday season!
xx

Great blog posts! I love the tips that the video provided and especially, "less is more" because that is so true! Nothing is worse then getting on a website and not knowing where to even start. Ikea is a great example. I often forget about them, but I just looked at their website and it is pretty good. Even their photos are a lot more modern looking then they used to be which is great to see.
